The official name used by the Daigo School of the Shingon Sect for the temple is “Mt. Shoho’s Kankoku-ji Temple.” However, it is usually referred to as “Sugatani Fudoson.”
It was founded in 1195 by Gonen Shonin, who was the uncle of the brothers Minamoto no Yoritomo and Minamoto no Yoshitsune.
A legend recounts that the temple was later destroyed by a lightning fire, but that a mud snail of the Mitarase waterfall protected the temple’s main worshiping object, a Fudo Myo-o statue, from destruction.
This Fudo Myo-o statue is usually kept hidden from view. It is only open to the public during a short period of time (during the Gokaicho event) on the Year of the Rooster and the Year of the Rabbit.
The main hall (built in 1770) and the temple gate (built in 1866) are designated Cultural Properties of Shibata City.
