The Three Reasons to
Come and See

Reason No. 1

Niigata Is a Veritable Paradise of Gardens,
With One Beautiful Garden After Another

As of March 2019, Niigata has the second highest number of Nationally-Designated Gardens of Scenic Beauty in eastern Japan, after Tokyo. On top of two gardens built under the auspices of the lords of Shibata fief, in the late 19th century Niigata was also home to 6 of the top 10 wealthiest taxpayers in Japan, with agricultural magnates, wealthy merchants, and oil tycoons all vying to have the nicest garden.

Reason No. 2

Niigata Allows You to Enjoy Not Only Gardens
But Amazing Buildings as Well

Seeing a Japanese garden from the seat of honor of each room,
you can truly appreciate the meaning that the garden designer
infused it with. Especially from the drawing room, you can see
the stunning view to entertain guests with the sense of hospitality.
Niigata will allow you to enjoy “teioku-ichinyo,” the concept of “building-garden unity” wherein the building and garden have a perfect harmony.

Reason No. 3

Niigata is the Mecca to Learn How to
Truly Appreciate Japanese Gardens

Niigata holds regular hands-on seminars on “How to Appreciate a Japanese Garden,” which allow participants to learn to enjoy gardens not just as beautiful scenery, but in a way that truly touches on Japanese culture and traditions.
Most of these facilities have in-house guides who are true experts in the field of Japanese gardens.

Teioku-Ichinyo

”Teioku-ichinyo” is an expression that means that a garden and its architectural features are in complete harmony. It also refers to a Japanese way of living inherited from ancient times. The tatami room has as few walls and columns as possible to offer a wide-open view of the garden. When all its sliding doors are open, the breeze of the garden freely flows in, allowing the tatami room to become one with the garden. The gardener works skillfully in collaboration with the master carpenter to create a garden view that best befits the intended use of the tatami room. A bright garden that offers the perfect settings for a drawing room where distinguished visitors can be entertained. A relaxing view from a comfortable room. A quiet sense of refinement emanates from the tea-ceremony room… Many of the Japanese-style gardens in Niigata still remain today because they were designed to go hand in hand with the buildings that were built at the same time, making it possible to fully appreciate the harmony that exists between them.
