親鸞聖人の越後七不思議の一つ“保田（やすだ）の三度栗”の寺として知られ、開基は承元2（1208：鎌倉前期）年の創建といわれています。
現在の本堂は、越後の千町歩地主の斉藤家の邸宅でした。
紫檀・黒檀・鉄刀木などの銘木を随所に使用していますが、邸宅の建築は、地元民に仕事を供給するために始め、大工・職人も含めた地域の人達で、昭和初期に10年の歳月をかけ完成したと伝えられています。
池泉回遊式の庭園は、五頭連峰を借景とした雄大なものです。

Kojun-ji Temple is known as the backdrop to Buddhist monk Shinran’s tale titled “Yasuda no Sandoguri,” which is considered one of the Seven Wonders of Echigo. The temple is thought to have been established in 1208.
The current main hall was the residence of the Saito Family, a large landowner of the Echigo region.
Noble wood essences such as rosewood, ebony, and ironwood are used profusely throughout the residence, but the construction began more as a way to supply local people with work. The carpenters and craftsmen completed the construction over a period of 10 years in the early 20th century.
The residence features a magnificent pond stroll garden that uses the Gozu Mountain Range as a backdrop.
