When it was decided to transform the Shibata feudal lord’s villa into a teahouse, Agata Sochi, who served as tea master for the Shogunate, was invited to work on the construction of this pond stroll garden. The trees in the garden are said to have been planted from seeds and seedlings obtained from famous places around the country. The pond, modeled on the Chinese character for “heart,” offers a reflection of the beautiful red cedar tree planted on the islet, and several miniature hills dot the surroundings.
The teahouse is a sophisticated pavilion built in the sukiya-zukuri style. It has an open structure for the best possible enjoyment of the garden from the tatami room in the summer.
