油田掘削によって巨万の富を得た長岡の清水常作が明治28（1895）年に別宅として建設し、明治末期に千町歩地主伊藤家が新潟別邸として取得しました。
落ち着いた数寄屋造りの主屋からは枯山水の回遊式庭園を望む開放的なつくりで、侘びた茶室、洋館が増築されています。
會津八一は洋館で晩年を過ごし、八一の書や資料、良寛の書の展示も充実しています。

Tsunesaku Shimizu, who made a fortune in the oil-drilling business, had this property built in 1895 as a secondary residence. At the beginning of the 20th century, the Ito Family, a large landowner in the region, acquired it as a villa.
A rock stroll garden, a refined tea-ceremony room, and a Western-style building were subsequently added around the unostentatious sukiya style main building.
Aizu Yaichi spent his later years at the Western-style building, where many items such as his books and documents as well as books by Ryokan are now exhibited.
