明治から昭和の新潟を代表する大地主、伊藤家の本邸として、8年の歳月をかけ明治22年に建てられました。部屋数65の純日本式住居で、土蔵造りの門、総けやき造り唐破風の大玄関、30ｍの杉の丸桁など、まさに「豪農の館」と呼ぶにふさわしい豪壮さを備えています。邸宅や収集した美術品を公開し、博物館として一般公開しています。庭園は新潟県出身の庭匠・田中泰阿弥の傑作です。

　This residence of the Itos, the most important Niigata landowners from the late 19th century, took eight years to build and was completed in 1889. The 65-room house has a purely Japanese construction, with a mud-wall gate, a Chinese-style cusped-gable zelkova entryhall, and 30-m cedar beams—this building truly earns its name of “Wealthy Farmer’s Manor.” It is open to the public as a museum, exhibiting not only fine architecture but the artwork that has been gathered over the years. The garden is a masterpiece of the famous Niigata-born gardener Taiami Tanaka.
