Toryu-ji Temple was built in the 9th century at the foot of Mt. Gomado as a temple of the Soto Sect.
The temple’s main worshiping object, a Fudo Myo-o statue kept hidden from view, is thought to have been made by Kukai, also known posthumously as Kobo-Daishi, or by his apprentice, Kuho Shonin.
The temple was rebuilt in its current location in 1332 under the protection of, Hiraga Hozan, lord of Gomado Castle.
The two large cedar trees at the entrance of the temple approach were planted by the founder himself, Mushozenyukokushi, and the temple hall commemorating the founder was built on donations from the Hara-Tamaki Family, a large landowner in the region.
Toryu-ji Temple is located next to Yudagami Hot Spring and offers Zazen meditation sessions.
The garden can be accessed freely from the main hall. Inquire at the priest’s quarter for additional information.
